NED WOKE UP THE NEXT morning and found his father drinking coffee at the table. When Ned came out of his bedroom, William made a show of looking at his watch.

“I thought I was going to have to wake you up to get you down to the hardware store in time for your shift. Must have been quite the date.”

Hardware store. Coppen’s Hardware Store. That’s right. He didn’t fire me until later in the summer, after everyone was already convinced I had killed Mary.

“You better grab a bowl of cereal. Old man Coppen will work you within an inch of your life, just like always does. It’s good for you, but you don’t want to go on an empty stomach.”

Ned couldn’t summon his words yet, so he just nodded and went into the kitchen to pour himself some cereal and milk. As he carried his bowl to the table, William passed him as he headed out the back door.

“See you tonight. I’ll be home first, so I’ll make dinner.”

“Okay, Dad. Sounds good.”

It was so good to see his father alive and healthy again, but it was hard for Ned to take any pleasure in that, or anything at all, really. The black cloud of failing to save Mary had settled over him and anger seeped into his bones.

He finished his cereal, hopped on his bike, and pedaled to the hardware store. As predicted, Mr. Coppen had left him a long list of heavy labor on the chalkboard by the back door.

When Ned saw Mr. Coppen for the first time, he almost jumped in surprise. Old man Coppen was substantially younger than Ned had been just a few days earlier, prior to being reborn. Coppen looked like he might be in his late fifties.

It's all about perspective. He looked ancient to me when I was eighteen.

Ned put his nose to the grindstone and knocked off the entire list by three o’clock. Mr. Coppen examined his work, saying, “Good enough, Ned. Good enough. See you next Saturday.“

Ned took his time riding home. He pedaled around town, letting the wind run over his face and his thoughts follow each other round and round in his head. He avoided Whitaker Park, of course, where he knew Mary Malone’s body was, lonely and awaiting discovery.

Ned had considered calling in an anonymous tip to the police that would tell them where she could be found, but he decided not to risk it. What’s done was done.

Instead, Ned made his plans for how he would manage to pin the murder on Deakins. He knew he couldn’t just call up one of the deputies and say, “Hey, I know Chief Deakins killed Mary Malone.” That would get him nowhere and only shine the spotlight on him.

Since Deakins was the law in Middle Falls, Ned knew he would have to go farther afield to recruit help. He knew that kind of help wouldn’t be available on a weekend, and regardless, he had to wait until the discovery of Mary’s body.
